Web site for Volunteers: One-Stop Shopping

Several local nonprofit organizations are using the Minnesota state employment Web site to advertise their needs for volunteers, hoping to create more interest in volunteering and to show the range of opportunities that exist.

Bremer Nonprofit Specialist Myrna Meadows said, “Whether it is board members, drivers, tutors or mentors, every group is looking for people willing to donate their time.” The Web site, www.MinnesotaWorks.net has a link to volunteering because skills developed in those situations are also applicable when seeking paid employment. Several organizations have registered a volunteer opportunity, in the same way they would list a job opening.

“This is an innovative use of our Web site and we’re glad to help this segment of our local economy,” said Sheila Demenge, WorkForce Development Representative. “If a nonprofit needs help in listing a volunteer position, they can call me for assistance at 218-283-9427.”

LeeAnn Meer, community engagement director for Kootasca said, ”In fact, someone called after seeing the listing, thinking it was a paid position. When we told them we were looking for a volunteer, they agreed!”

The cooperation came about after several organizations identified coordination of volunteers as a priority. Often, it is word of mouth that moves a person to volunteer but rarely does one person know the range of opportunities.
