Board Self-Assessment

A well-designed board self-assessment is an important step in strategic planning. A nonprofit’s strategic plan is likely to concentrate on program and facility but the self-assessment can help establish goals for the organizational structure. It gives each board member an opportunity to evaluate overall effectiveness, but should be detailed enough to identify areas that need attention.

Assessment tools usually include questions on governance, financial oversight, legal compliance, communication and participation, personnel and volunteer management and board succession.
