What is a Board Bank and How Does it Work?

An example of a Board Bank comes from the Grand Forks community - the Volunteer Leadership Connection Board Bank, an entity of the Grand Forks Community Foundation. The Volunteer Leadership Connection Board Bank is a place that strengthens community leadership by developing a knowledgeable pool of new leaders for the nonprofit sector. The board bank is a place where community members interested in serving as a board of director can connect with nonprofit organizations in the Greater Grand Forks area, who are looking for board members.

The Community Foundation accepts applications from individuals for the Board Bank database, and offers the two-hour ‘Board Primer’ seminar to help the prospective board members learn the basic skills needed to serve on a board of directors. This training is strongly encouraged for applicants and is offered twice a year. The applications are processed into the Board Bank database. When a nonprofit organization or government committee needs to consider new board or committee members, applicants are selected from the database by matching applicant skills and interests to the needs of the organization.

The first hour of training concentrates on what nonprofit boards are, what the law requires of boards, and what the responsibilities of the board are to the organization, the community, and the government. The second hour training concentrates on what it takes to be a good board member, what you need to know about an organization’s programming and finances, keeping track of legal responsibilities, conflicts of interest, fundraising and personal giving, being a voice in the community, and an advocate for the organization

Information about applying for the Board Bank, or using the Board Bank database to fill positions on boards or committees by nonprofit organizations is sent out twice a year to keep the applications up-to-date and relevant.
