There are many possible job rewards that employees may receive, both external and internal. Philosophers and scholars have theorized about human needs and motivation for centuries; however, managers should recognize individual employees, as well as volunteers, differ in their needs. For example, an individual with high need for power can be given opportunities to exercise influence, or an individual with a high need for achievement can be allowed to excel in a specific task.
In order to attract high-quality paid and volunteer staff, managers must rely on creative strategies beyond finanical rewards to recruit, retain, and motivate. Understanding “what you need from your work” may be the manager’s most important skill.
