Reinvigorating Your Board

Fall is approaching and with it, perhaps, the need to reinvigorate your board.

A retreat takes time and resources, but can provide a kick-start to planning and action. Here are guidelines culled from several websites including www.BoardSource.org, www.allianceonline.org and www.managementhelp.org.

1. Set objectives, based on discussions with staff and board members.
2. Find a location other than the board room.
3. Invite an expert to speak or facilitate the discussions.
4. Include time for getting to know each other better and reflection.
5. Capture “lessons learned” and application for your organization.
6. Revisit the ideas throughout the year.
