Merging Cultures

When two organizations decide to merge, system integration can involve accounting, budgets, human resources and information. The integration of two different cultures often gets overlooked because it is less tangible.

However, recognizing that there are two ways of seeing and being, and being explicit about that, is the beginning. In Fieldstone Alliance’s publication, The Nonprofit Mergers Workbook, staff of each nonprofit are asked to identify values, heroes and cherished customs, even to tell stories. "Remember, much of what makes up an organization’s culture is unspoken, but it is very much present and alive," it notes.
