Winning Entry #5

We needed to increase the size of our board. I met with the current board members and we looked at the makeup we had and discussed what expertise we wanted/needed on the board. A list of names was generated. We then, as a group, discussed the list of names and determined who had a relationship with the new possibilities. The person with the best relationship was then asked to make "the ask" of the new potential board member.

It has been my experience that when you make a personal invitation to someone that you have a relationship with - it is very powerful and often is the difference between a yes or a no. Telling the nominee the reasons they were selected often helps with the process. Then the board members know why they were asked and what expertise they will be bringing. It worked well for us.

Then - I coordinated and scheduled board training.
