Have you, as a nonprofit, ever realized the power of your voice and the expertise that you can bring to the table?
When decisions are being made by local, state or national policy makers, nonprofits can and should be speaking out and educating decision makers on their field of expertise. Often times, we forget and don’t realize the depth of our knowledge that we can provide to decision makers.
When talking about your field of expertise or a particular issue, remember to use language that can be understood by the general population, not acronyms or words that are common to your particular organization. Also, when presenting your information, talk in terms of outcomes that are important not only to your organization, but the benefits to the community as well.
I would also challenge policy makers to be open and searching out this information so their decisions are as educated and well understood as possible. After all, you don’t know what you don’t know…
