Where to Find Grant Opportunities

Our upcoming fourth quarter newsletter for nonprofits and community partners is entitled “Effective Grant Writing” and because of that, I’ve been thinking about many aspects of that topic. Today I decided to back up a bit and answer the question, “Where do I find grant opportunities?”

To apply an adage from another realm, “Start where you are.” Use affiliations to your advantage. Ask to be on the mailing list of state, regional and federal agencies that are relevant to your organization’s work. Federal government agencies that make grants are listed in the Catalog of Domestic Assistance. Instructions and information can be found at http://www.cfda.gov/.

Foundations and corporations in our area are listed in the guide published by the Minnesota Council on Foundations. Both hard copies and an online subscription are available. There are also tips on preparation of a grant proposal at http://www.mcf.org/. Take the time to troll websites. It is a good way to learn about projects that have been successful and levels of funding.

In all cases, both the applicant and the grantor must have the same interests and intentions for a proposal to be considered. Once you identify a potential resource, request guidelines and study eligibility requirements. Allow plenty of time and agency resources to complete the application. Remember – deadlines aren’t negotiable.
