Effective Board Training

I recently met with the training team that piloted a board program - “Board Leadership Academy” - for nonprofits in the Alexandria, Minn., area. The program included a full-day training on board self care and board planning for staff and board members of nine organizations. The training was followed by a one-hour coaching session with one of the trainers of the program. Each nonprofit organization was challenged to identify a goal or two to work on prior to their coaching session, and the trainer would then provide additional resources and encouragement to complete the identified goals. The group will reconvene in November to monitor progress and garner ideas for future board trainings.

The training group discussed the need for board training, the importance of training in creating successful nonprofit organizations, and the reality of turnover and change with boards. We as a team questioned: what do organizations really want, what do they feel they really need, what is most helpful to them and what would have REAL impact on organizations?

We continue to work on finding and creating a model that will effectively help organizations in board development and leadership, putting them in the position to become the most effective nonprofit organizations they can be. What has worked best for you?
