While we’re on the topic of news releases and public relations, I want to share the list I found at www.nakedpr.com. The author doesn’t advocate the mass submitting of press releases and offers several Web sites for the improvement of your release. That said, her “Big List of Free Press Distribution Sites” is there for the taking. Blogs specific to public relations can also be accessed here, and discussions on ethics.
I have used www.managementlibrary.org to get started on many topics. It hosts a free library for nonprofits including super sites that provide articles, FAQs and links of most use to nonprofits. When I keyed into the discussion there on media relations, a quote from “Promoting Issues and Ideas,” by M. Booth and Associates, Inc. seemed worth passing on: “If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying ‘Circus Coming to the Fair Grounds Saturday’ that’s advertising. If you put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk it into town, that’s promotion. If the elephant walks through the mayor’s flower bed, that’s publicity. But if you get the mayor to laugh about it, that’s public relations.”
