Nonprofits and Economic Challenges

A number of articles and blogs are offering perspective and predictions on the effects nonprofits, funders and donors are likely to experience as a result of our local, national and global economic woes. Some are also offering guidance.

Here are a few to check out. Feel free to add a comment to this blog on any others you’ve noticed, as well as your perspective on whether you believe the commentaries or information are on target, helpful, or otherwise.

Managing and Adapting in a Time of Uncertainty – a resource article by Nonprofits Assistance Fund. Authored by Kate Barr, executive director of Nonprofits Assistance Fund, the article outlines “a framework for discussion and action to prepare for and respond to today’s challenges.”

Kate Barr’s Blog, Balancing the Mission Checkbook, also has several related and recent postings on various aspects of this topic. If you aren’t already a subscriber, you may want to sign up.

The Foundation Center, headquartered in New York and supported by more than 600 foundations, is a leading authority on philanthropy. An article in Philanthropy News Digest posted on 10/15/08 from a Boston College Press Release on 10/10/08 takes on the topic of charitable giving in the current climate: “Despite Downturn, There’s Hope for Charitable Giving, Researchers Say.”

And one more for now: “Opportunities in Lean Times,” Field Focus e-newsletter by Fieldstone Alliance, a Minnesota nonprofit organization providing consulting, publishing, and training.
