Fargo Martin Luther King Day Volunteer Snow Removal Event

The Metro Area Mayors Committee proposed that communities encourage volunteer projects in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Several Fargo-Moorhead nonprofits encouraged people to volunteer to come out in force with shovels and snow blowers to clear snow away from walkways, fire hydrants and emergency access ways. The idea caught the imagination of many in the communities. As one of the leaders said, "We have volunteers coming from all over with their shovels to help with this snow-removal project -- it's awesome!”

The event made much sense in light of the many heavy snowfalls the Fargo-Moorhead metro area has experienced. December snowfalls set an all-time record with more than 30 inches. Several more snows have occurred in January and it has been hard for people to keep ahead of it. The fire departments have worried about the extra time it may take to find and dig out the hydrants in case of a fire. Residents on foot have had to climb over piles of snow at crosswalks. The work of these volunteers a great help to our communities.
