Is There Any Good News Out There?

In the MN Council of Foundation's latest addition of the Giving Forum it says that Minnesota foundations and corporate giving programs project that giving will be down in 2009 about four percent overall, this from the Foundations’ 2009 Outlook Report. No new news to anyone really.

It is no surprise that nonprofits along with other sectors are feeling the economic squeeze – funds seem to be drying up and the competition for grants is fierce. This is the reality of our world and all sectors are looking for ways to do their work more efficiently, and maybe differently.

In one of the communities I work in, nonprofits have become increasingly interested in networking, and trying to find ways they can work together. Through a series of Brown Bag lunch meetings in Morris, Minn., a group of nonprofits have been meeting and discussing ways to fundraise, pool volunteers and find ways to raise visibility of the sector in the community. We don’t know what the outcome of these meetings will be, but it has been a positive move forward.
There is a desire to build relationships, learn about each others organizations and try to find ways to connect and intersect the work of the nonprofit sector, and that is good news!
