Strategic Planning Resource for Nonprofits

I’m using Strategic Planning for Nonprofit Organizations by Allison and Kaye for my next training. I like the way it takes a business approach to some of the planning, calling programs your "portfolio" in an acknowledgement that it is indeed what you are investing in. An especially useful diagram to help decide whether a program should be maintained or spun off takes into account mission impact and financial viability. It is a CompassPoint publication from Wiley.com.

I agree, Myrna. We also use what we call the Mission - Money matrix to visualize and discuss both mission impact and financial impact of activities and programs. Making decisions about that balance is at the heart of nonprofit leadership.
