Food Insecurity

I recently attended a Bremer Bank staff meeting with a representative, Michelle Dingwall, from Feed My People Food Bank. Feed My People is a food distribution site in Eau Claire that serves 14 counties in Wisconsin.

Here is a snapshot of Food Insecurity in Western Wisconsin:
People that are food-insecure: 74, 230 (12.6%)
Children that are food-insecure: 32,520 (24.5%)
Pounds of food distributed in 2011: 7,418,859

Here is a snapshot of Food Insecurity in St. Croix County, WI
People that are food-insecure: 8,090 (9.8%)
Children that are food-insecure: 4,290 (20.3%)
Pounds of food distributed in 2011: 552,230

Children struggle more in the summer for food. What can we do to help? Support the Bremer Bank Hunger Awareness campaign during this month of June or talk to a local food shelf to get some ideas.

One of the biggest months for food struggles is July. Pantries do not receive government commodities during this month. It is a great time to donate food items. Check out your local food shelf and find out what’s needed. Become part of the solution.
