This question usually assumes you have one to call, which may not be the case for many nonprofits – especially small organizations in rural communities.
I’m not a lawyer, but may I offer a bit of “legal advice?”
LegalCORPS www.legalcorps.org connects volunteer lawyers with nonprofit organizations that meet these criteria:
* Primary purpose is charitable or community-based
* Have or could have 501©3 or 501©4 tax-exempt status
* Meet criteria showing capability of ongoing operations
* Have revenues under $200,000 per year
* Are not seeking help with litigation
LegalCORPS gives priority to nonprofits that serve low-income populations, but volunteer lawyers also work with nonprofits whose missions involve service to social services, education, cultural, economic development and other fields.
Bremer Nonprofit Resource Specialists often take calls from organizations seeking professional services to help them with legal issues such as contracts, transactions, mergers, policies, real estate matters, managing liability risks, tax exempt status, government regulations and more. LegalCorps is a resource for some of these organizations. If legal matters are on your agenda, find out if you qualify for LegalCORPS services by checking out the Web site above.
