Board Committees/Board Decisions

When should the board accept the recommendation of a committee? Realizing that effective use of committees distributes and expedites the work of the board, it can cause some uncomfortable situations when board members question the work of the committee.

When done appropriately, however, I feel the board ought to support the recommendations of the committee if (and only if) the committee shares information that led to their recommendations.

A problem can occur when committees are used as the “workhorses” of the board causing the board to eventually rubber-stamp committee decisions.

Interestingly, I was just faced with this dilemma today and I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on this.
